Frequently Asked Questions — QR & Barcode Reader
Is the QR code reader tool really free?
Yes, completely free. No registration, no hidden charges, no file size limits. All processing happens locally in your browser using the native BarcodeDetector API — your images never leave your device.
What types of barcodes can be detected?
Our tool supports QR codes, Code128, Code39, Code93, EAN-8, EAN-13, ITF, UPC-A, UPC-E, DataMatrix, PDF417, and Aztec codes. The browser's BarcodeDetector API detects and decodes all of these formats automatically from your uploaded images.
Which browsers support barcode detection?
The BarcodeDetector API is supported in Chrome, Edge, and other Chromium-based browsers. For Firefox and Safari, the tool falls back to a JavaScript-based QR decoder (jsQR) which supports QR codes. Most common use cases involve QR codes, so the tool works across all browsers.
What image formats are supported?
JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP, AVIF, GIF, TIFF, SVG, HEIC and more. Any image format that your browser can render is supported.
Can I scan multiple codes from one image?
Yes. If your image contains multiple QR codes or barcodes, all of them will be detected and decoded. Each code is displayed separately with its format type and decoded content.
How accurate is the barcode detection?
The BarcodeDetector API is very accurate for clear, well-lit, properly oriented codes. For best results, ensure codes are at least 100 pixels in size and not overly rotated or distorted. Blurry or very small codes may not be detected.
How large of an image can I process?
Our tool handles images up to 50 megapixels (50,000,000 pixels total). If an image exceeds this limit, you'll see a warning and can try a smaller version.
