  • Batch processing multiple group photos? All faces from all images are cropped and available for download individually or as a ZIP archive.

Frequently Asked Questions — Auto Face Crop

Is the auto face crop tool really free?

Yes, completely free. No registration, no hidden charges, no watermarks, and no file size limits. RetinaFace runs locally via WebAssembly — your images never leave your device.

How does auto face crop work?

Our tool uses RetinaFace to detect all faces in your image. For each detected face, it calculates a crop area with a 30% margin around the face bounding box (to create a natural portrait framing), then extracts that region as a separate image. If no face is found, the original image is returned as-is.

What happens if a photo has multiple faces?

Each detected face is extracted as a separate cropped image. For example, a group photo with 5 people will produce 5 cropped face images. Each crop is named with a number suffix so you can easily identify them.

What image formats are supported?

JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP, AVIF, GIF, TIFF, SVG, HEIC and more. Each cropped face is saved in the original upload format, preserving quality.

What if no face is detected in my image?

If RetinaFace doesn't find any faces in an image, the original image is returned unchanged so you don't lose your upload. RetinaFace is highly accurate (96.7% on WIDER FACE), so this is rare for photos containing visible faces.

Can I adjust the crop margin or size?

The crop uses a fixed 30% margin around each detected face, which produces well-framed portrait crops. If you need custom cropping, you can use our separate Crop tool after extracting the face.

How large of an image can I process?

Our tool handles images up to 50 megapixels (50,000,000 pixels total). If an individual image exceeds this limit, you'll see a warning and can try a smaller version.
