Tips for Face Blurring
- The blur strength is fixed at a high level (radius 15px) to ensure faces are sufficiently obscured for privacy protection.
- RetinaFace achieves 96.7% mAP on the WIDER FACE benchmark — it reliably detects front-facing, angled, and profile faces for comprehensive privacy protection.
- Batch process multiple photos containing crowds or bystanders at once — each face is detected and blurred with the same high standard.
Frequently Asked Questions — Face Blur for Privacy
Is the face blur tool really free?
Yes, completely free. No registration, no hidden charges, no watermarks, and no file size limits. The RetinaFace model runs locally via WebAssembly — your images never leave your device.
How does face blur work?
Our tool uses RetinaFace (one of the most accurate face detection models) running via WebAssembly to detect all faces in an image. For each detected face, it applies a strong Gaussian blur (15px radius) to the face region using the browser's built-in canvas filtering — completely obscuring facial features while leaving the rest of the image untouched.
How strong is the blur?
The blur uses a 15px Gaussian blur radius, which is strong enough to completely obscure facial features — eyes, nose, mouth — making the face unrecognizable. This level of blur is suitable for privacy protection in public sharing, journalism, and social media compliance.
What image formats are supported?
JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP, AVIF, GIF, TIFF, SVG, HEIC and more. The blurred result is saved in your original upload format.
Can I adjust the blur strength?
Currently, the blur radius is fixed at 15px to ensure consistent privacy protection. This level guarantees facial features are fully obscured while maintaining a natural look. Future updates may add adjustable blur strength.
Does face blur work on group photos?
Yes. RetinaFace detects all faces in an image, regardless of how many people are present. Each face is individually blurred. Batch processing allows you to process multiple group photos at once.
How large of an image can I process?
Our tool handles images up to 50 megapixels (50,000,000 pixels total). If an individual image exceeds this limit, you'll see a warning and can try a smaller version.
